Class 8 maths: the foundation year for boards

Class 8 is where algebra becomes serious. Identities, factorisation, roots, compound interest and 3D mensuration all arrive, and they feed straight into Classes 9 and 10. A solid Class 8 makes board years far calmer.

The year ahead

What children learn in Class 8 maths

Rational numbers and exponents

Properties of rational numbers and more on powers.

Linear equations

Equations in one variable, including word problems and variables on both sides.

Algebraic expressions and identities

Multiplying expressions and the standard identities such as (a + b)ยฒ.

Factorisation

Taking out common factors and using identities to factorise.

Squares, cubes and roots

Perfect squares, square and cube roots and patterns.

Comparing quantities

Percentage change, profit and loss, and compound interest.

Mensuration

Area of trapeziums and polygons, surface area and volume of cubes, cuboids and cylinders.

Quadrilaterals, data, probability

Properties of quadrilaterals, grouped data and probability.

CBSE, ICSE and state boards teach very similar ideas but in a different order and depth, and textbooks are revised from time to time. Tell us your board, your textbook and the topic your child is on, and we will start there instead of guessing.

Common trouble spots

Where Class 8 children usually get stuck

  • Memorising identities. Show (a + b)ยฒ with a square cut into four pieces so the middle 2ab is something you can see.
  • Factorisation. It's multiplication in reverse. Practise expanding first, then reverse.
  • Compound interest. Do year 1, year 2 and year 3 by hand before using the formula.
  • Mensuration formulas. Understand where the formula comes from (area of base ร— height) so you don't need to cram a dozen.

A four-week plan for home

Twenty to thirty minutes on most days is enough. Change the order if your child is already ahead on a topic.

  1. 01
    Week 1: Expressions and identities

Expand 5 expressions a day and check one identity with numbers.

  2. 02
    Week 2: Factorisation

Factorise, then expand to check. Aim for steady accuracy, not speed.

  3. 03
    Week 3: Interest and percentages

Hand-calculate compound interest for 3 years, then use the compound interest calculator to check.

  4. 04
    Week 4: Mensuration

Find surface area and volume of everyday objects like a box and a water bottle.

Working with us

How online maths classes work

  1. Tell us about your child. Share the class, board, textbook or topic, what feels hard and how much time is available. A parent or guardian makes the enquiry.
  2. We confirm the fit. We suggest a starting point and confirm the format, time and availability before anything is booked. If an introductory lesson or assessment has a fee, we say so up front.
  3. Learn, practise and review. Interactive lessons with the child writing and talking, practice between sessions and a short update for parents. We do not promise marks or ranks.

FAQ

Class 8 maths: questions parents ask

Is Class 8 maths really harder than Class 7?

It feels harder because several algebra ideas arrive at once and are used immediately in later classes. The ideas themselves are learnable with clear steps and practice.

Should Class 8 students prepare for IOQM or Olympiads?

IOQM is open from Class 8, but only try it if school maths is comfortable and your child enjoys problem solving. See our IOQM guide for what to expect.

How many hours of maths practice a week is right?

For most Class 8 students, 20 to 30 focused minutes on most days beats one long session. Quality of attention matters more than hours.

My child is weak at algebra. Can online tuition fix it?

Good tuition finds the first gap (often fractions, integers or sign rules) and rebuilds from there. We can discuss this with a short conversation about what your child finds hard.
