How to play Fraction Fluency

  1. Choose a grade and fraction skill.
  2. Solve the question and enter your answer.
  3. Read the feedback, then continue to the next challenge.
  4. Build your mastery and come back later to practise again.

Tips and strategy

  • Draw or picture the whole before comparing its parts.
  • Equivalent fractions keep the same value when you multiply or divide the top and bottom by the same number.
  • For unlike denominators, find a common denominator before adding.

Learn beyond the game

Explore the idea behind Fraction Fluency

Worked example

To add 3/4 + 1/8, rename 3/4 as 6/8. Then add the eighths: 6/8 + 1/8 = 7/8. The denominator names the size of the pieces, so make those pieces match first.

Common sticking point

Do not add the denominators. Three quarters plus one eighth is not four twelfths: the pieces have different sizes until you use a common denominator.

Try it away from the screen

Draw a rectangle, split it into equal parts, and shade 1/2 in one colour and 1/4 in another. How much is shaded altogether? Explain why both colours use the same whole.

Mini challenge

What is 2/3 of 18? Find one third first, then take two of those groups. Check by multiplying 18 ร— 2/3.

How to use this practice path

Build the idea in order: equal parts, fractions of a set, equivalent fractions, simplifying, then adding and multiplying. The game lets you choose a skill; revisit a missed idea before moving on.

Where the idea goes next

Fractions connect to ratios, percentages, probability and algebra. Try Fraction Pizza to model parts visually, then use the fractions worksheet away from the screen.
