Age 10 ยท Grade 5 ยท Year 6 ยท Class 5
Maths, coding and Rubik's Cube for 10-year-olds.
At ten, many children are ready for harder reasoning and enjoy puzzles that need several steps.
Maths
Fractions, decimals and percentages, factors and multiples, order of operations, area of triangles, angles, simple ratio and negative numbers.
Coding
Python programs with loops, lists and functions, or first web pages with HTML. Debugging becomes a skill.
Rubik's Cube
Faster solves with the beginner method, then two-look OLL and PLL if they want more.
A good first goal
Reading an error message and fixing it, and understanding percentages as parts of a hundred.
A simple week
About 15 to 20 minutes a day. Here is one way to spread it:
| Day | What to do |
|---|---|
| Mon | Percentages or fractions practice |
| Tue | Python program |
| Thu | Logic puzzle or Olympiad-style problem |
| Sat | Cube algorithms |

Age 10: questions parents ask
My ten-year-old gets stuck on percentages. Where should we start?
Start with 50%, 25% and 10%, which link to halves, quarters and tenths. Then build other percentages from those, such as 15% as 10% plus half of 10%.
Is ten a good age for Python?
Yes. Reading and typing are usually comfortable, and loops, lists and small puzzles fit what children are learning in maths.
What maths should a 10-year-old be learning?
Fractions, decimals and percentages, factors and multiples, order of operations, area of triangles, angles, simple ratio and negative numbers. Every school sets its own order, so check the textbook your child uses.
Can a 10-year-old learn to code?
Python programs with loops, lists and functions, or first web pages with HTML. Debugging becomes a skill.
Can a 10-year-old solve a Rubik's Cube?
Faster solves with the beginner method, then two-look OLL and PLL if they want more.
What school year is a 10-year-old in?
Roughly Grade 5 in the US, Year 6 in the UK and Class 5 in India. It depends on the country, the school and the birthday.
How much should a 10-year-old practise?
15 to 20 minutes a day is plenty, mixed across maths, coding and puzzles. Short and regular beats long and rare.
