How to play Function Machine
- Pick a machine on the map. Tier 1 rules take one step, tier 2 take two (like 2x + 1), and tier 3 use squares, cubes and doubling.
- Tap a number to feed it in. The output drops out of the chute, joins the table and appears on the graph.
- When you can see the pattern, press I've cracked it and predict three outputs, including big numbers you didn't try.
- Then name the rule using x for the input, such as
3x - 2orx^2 + 1. - Use few tries and predict correctly for three stars.
Tips and strategy
- Feed 0 first: whatever comes out is the number added at the end (for two-step rules).
- Feed 1, 2, 3 in order and look at how much the output goes up each time: that is the multiplier.
- If the jumps themselves grow (1, 3, 5, 7…), the rule has a square in it.
- A straight line on the graph means a linear rule like 2x + 1; a curve means powers.

FAQ
Function Machine: questions
What is a function machine?
A function machine takes an input number, applies a rule (such as “multiply by 2, then add 1”) and gives an output. Working out the hidden rule from inputs and outputs is a key early algebra skill.
What age is this game for?
Tier 1 suits ages 8 and up. Tier 2 (two-step rules) matches about ages 10 to 12, and tier 3 (squares, cubes and doubling) stretches teenagers.
How do I type the rule?
Use x for the input: 2x + 1, 3*x - 2, x^2 + 1, (x+1)^2 or 2^x all work. The game checks your rule against the machine on many numbers.
How are stars earned?
Crack the rule with only a few tries (2 in tier 1, 3 in tier 2, 4 in tier 3) and get all three predictions right for three stars.
Is it free?
Yes. No sign-up or ads, and your stars are saved in your browser.
