How to play Five-Letter Quest

  1. Choose 4 letters (easier) or 5 letters, or open the daily challenge.
  2. Type a word with your keyboard or the on-screen keys and press Enter.
  3. Green means the right letter in the right place. Yellow means the letter is in the word but somewhere else. Grey means it is not in the word.
  4. Use the colours to narrow down the answer. The keyboard also changes colour.
  5. You have six tries. When you finish, press Share to copy your coloured grid.

Tips and strategy

  • Start with a word that has common letters and different vowels, such as 'stare' or 'house'.
  • Use your second guess to test new letters instead of repeating yellow ones in the same spot.
  • Remember that a letter can appear twice. A second yellow or green may mean a double.
  • Any word of the right length counts as a guess, so you can use a guess just to test letters.

FAQ

Five-Letter Quest: questions

How is the daily challenge different?

Everyone who plays the daily challenge on the same day gets the same hidden word. A new word arrives at midnight UTC.

Is every guess checked against a dictionary?

No. Any word of the right length counts as a guess, so younger players are never stopped by a missing word, though the hidden word is always a common everyday word.

Is there a 4-letter version?

Yes. Choose 4 letters for an easier game with shorter words.

Is it free?

Yes. It is free to play with no account.
