Chance and data, made visible
Probability, averages and correlation: how to measure chance and what a pattern in data can and cannot tell you.
Probability and statistics are about making sense of uncertainty. These lessons use a bag of marbles to teach chance, bar charts to teach averages and a cloud of dots to teach correlation, so you can see how the numbers behave.
They also teach healthy habits of thought: a high correlation is not proof of cause, and an average can hide a lot of detail about the numbers behind it.

Where to start
- Ages 9 to 12: Start with the marble bag, then averages and the mean.
- Ages 12 to 14: Add percentages, then try the Plinko lab to see chance in action.
- Ages 14 to 16: Finish with correlation and the probability notes for Class 10.

FAQ
Probability and Statistics: questions people ask
What is the difference between probability and statistics?
Probability predicts how likely future events are from known chances. Statistics works backwards, using data you have collected to learn about what is going on.
What does correlation mean?
It measures how closely two sets of numbers follow a straight-line pattern together, from โ1 to +1. It does not show that one causes the other.
Are these lessons free?
Yes. They run in your browser and need no account.
Which lesson is best for beginners?
Start with the marble bag lesson on probability. It needs only fractions.
