How to play Correlation
- Read the first step: each dot is one student, with hours studied and test score.
- Move the sliders and switches to change the diagram and watch what happens. The readout under the picture shows the numbers.
- Answer each question. If you are wrong you get a hint and can try again, with no penalty.
- Some steps ask you to make something happen, such as hitting a target value. Experiment until it works.
- Finish the lesson to earn XP and see how many questions you got right first time.
Tips and strategy
- Do not rush. The controls are there to be played with, so try extreme values as well as sensible ones.
- Say what you notice out loud or write it down before you press Continue.
- Use the hint when you are stuck, and then try to explain the answer in your own words.
- Ask both questions: which way is the pattern, and how tight is it?

FAQ
Correlation: questions
What is correlation?
A number between −1 and +1 that measures how closely two sets of numbers follow a straight-line pattern together.
Does a high correlation mean one thing causes the other?
No. Two things can move together because of a third cause, or by chance. You need more evidence to show cause.
What does r = 0 mean?
There is no straight-line pattern. It does not always mean there is no relationship, because a curved pattern can also give r near 0.
What age is this lesson for?
It suits ages 13 to 16, when students first draw scatter plots.
