Mean, median & mode: paste your numbers, get the picture.
Type or paste a list of numbers, such as test marks, daily sales or cricket scores. See the average, the middle value, the most common value and how spread out the data is.
What each measure tells you
- Mean is the total divided by how many numbers there are. It is the usual โaverageโ.
- Median is the middle value when sorted (or the mean of the two middle values). It is not pulled around by one very large or very small number, so it is better for incomes and house prices.
- Mode is the value that appears most often. A list can have no mode, one mode or several.
- Range is the largest value minus the smallest, a quick measure of spread.
- Standard deviation says how far numbers typically sit from the mean. Use the population version if your list is everyone, and the sample version if it is a sample from something larger.
Example: 4, 8, 6, 5, 3, 8, 9. Sorted: 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 8, 9. The mean is 43 รท 7 โ 6.14, the median is 6, the mode is 8 and the range is 6.
Quartiles here are found as the median of the lower and upper halves of the data. Different textbooks use slightly different methods, so exam answers can differ by a small amount.
FAQ
Common questions
When should I use the median instead of the mean?
When a few extreme values would distort the mean, for example salaries where one person earns far more than the rest. The median gives the typical middle value.
What is the difference between sample and population standard deviation?
Population divides by n and is used when you have every value. Sample divides by n โ 1 and is used when your numbers are a sample, to avoid underestimating the spread.
Can a data set have more than one mode?
Yes. If two values tie for most frequent, the data is bimodal and both are modes. If every value appears once, there is no mode.
