Fraction calculator: with every step shown.
Type two fractions, mixed numbers or decimals, choose an operation, and get the answer in its simplest form together with the working your teacher would want to see.
How to work with fractions
- Adding or subtracting: first make the bottom numbers (denominators) the same, using the lowest common denominator. Then add or subtract the tops. 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.
- Multiplying: multiply the tops together and the bottoms together. 2/3 ร 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2.
- Dividing: flip the second fraction upside down and multiply. 1/2 รท 1/4 = 1/2 ร 4/1 = 2.
- Simplifying: divide the top and bottom by their highest common factor. 6/8 becomes 3/4 when both are divided by 2.
- Mixed numbers: 1 1/2 means 1 + 1/2 = 3/2. Type it with a space, like 1 1/2.
To find the lowest common denominator or simplify by hand, use the LCM and HCF calculator. To turn a fraction into a percentage, see the percentage calculator.
FAQ
Common questions
How do you add fractions with different denominators?
Find a common denominator, usually the lowest common multiple of the two bottoms, rewrite both fractions with it, then add the tops. The calculator shows this working.
How do I simplify a fraction?
Divide the top and bottom by their highest common factor. A fraction is in simplest form when the only number that divides both is 1.
Can I enter a mixed number like 2 3/4?
Yes. Type the whole number, a space, then the fraction: 2 3/4. You can also type decimals such as 0.75 or negative numbers.
