Roman numerals: convert both ways.
Type 2026 and get MMXXVI, or type MCMXLVII and get 1947. A symbol chart and the rules are below.
The rules
- Seven symbols: I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000.
- Symbols are added from largest to smallest: VIII = 5 + 3 = 8.
- A smaller symbol before a larger one is subtracted: IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, XC = 90, CD = 400, CM = 900.
- A symbol can repeat up to three times in a row (III = 3), but not four.
- Only I, X and C can be subtracted, and only from the next two larger symbols.
Examples: 49 = XLIX (40 + 9), 1947 = MCMXLVII, 2026 = MMXXVI. Standard Roman numerals stop at 3999, and there is no symbol for zero.
You will meet Roman numerals on clocks, book chapters, school class numbers and film copyright years. Turn this into a game: ask your child to write today's date in Roman numerals.
FAQ
Common questions
How do I write 2026 in Roman numerals?
MMXXVI. That is MM (2000) + XX (20) + VI (6).
Why is 4 written IV and not IIII?
The standard subtractive rule puts a smaller symbol before a larger one: IV means 5 โ 1. Some clock faces still use IIII for visual balance.
Is there a Roman numeral for zero?
No. The Romans had no symbol for zero, and the standard system runs from I (1) to MMMCMXCIX (3999).
