Beginner method ยท step 7 of 7

Step 7: Twist the corners and finish.

Last step! The corners are in the right places, but some are twisted. You will twist each one the right way with four moves repeated two or four times. The cube looks scrambled in the middle, and then everything lines up at the end.

Goal of this step The cube is solved.

The rule

Hold the cube so a corner that is not yellow-side-up is at the top front-right. Do R' D' R D until that corner has its yellow sticker facing up. That takes two or four goes. It will look as if you are breaking the cube; keep going.

Next corner

Now turn only the top layer (U) to bring the next unsolved corner to the front-right. Do not turn the whole cube. Repeat the four moves until that corner is yellow-side-up. Keep going until all four corners are yellow on top.

Finish

After the last corner, the top layer is solved but may be a quarter, half or three-quarter turn away from the rest. Turn the top layer to line it up, and the cube is solved.

Two things to remember

Never turn the whole cube during this step, only the top layer. And do not stop in the middle of the four moves: finish the whole R' D' R D each time, and check after each full set.

Watch it, step by step

Press play to watch the moves on a cube, or step through them one at a time. Drag the cube to look from another side.

Three corners to twistThree corners are turned the wrong way. Each takes two sets of the four moves, with only the top layer turning in between.

Common mistakes

  • Turning the whole cube between corners. Only turn the top layer with U.
  • Stopping in the middle of R' D' R D.
  • Giving up when the cube looks messy. It lines up after the last corner.

FAQ

Step 7: questions

Why does the cube look scrambled in the middle?

Each set of four moves moves other pieces on its way to twist the corner. When all four corners are done the pieces line up again.

How do I know whether to do it two or four times?

You do not need to know. Do the four moves again and again until the yellow sticker faces up. It will take two sets for some corners and four for others.

What if the last layer is solved but not lined up?

Turn the top layer (U) until the colours match the centres. The cube is solved.

I solved it! What now?
