How to play Systems of Equations
- Read the first step: the meeting point fits both equations.
- Move the sliders and switches to change the diagram and watch what happens. The readout under the picture shows the numbers.
- Answer each question. If you are wrong you get a hint and can try again, with no penalty.
- Some steps ask you to make something happen, such as hitting a target value. Experiment until it works.
- Finish the lesson to earn XP and see how many questions you got right first time.
Tips and strategy
- Do not rush. The controls are there to be played with, so try extreme values as well as sensible ones.
- Say what you notice out loud or write it down before you press Continue.
- Use the hint when you are stuck, and then try to explain the answer in your own words.
- Compare the slopes first. They tell you how many solutions to expect.

FAQ
Systems of Equations: questions
What is a system of equations?
Two or more equations that must be true at the same time. With two unknowns, the solution is the pair of values that satisfies both.
Why do the lines cross at the solution?
Each equation is a line made of all the points that fit it. The point on both lines fits both equations, so it is the solution.
Can a system have no solution?
Yes. If the two lines are parallel they never meet, so no pair of values fits both equations.
What age is this lesson for?
It suits ages 13 to 16, usually after learning slope and straight lines.
