FAQ

Area of Rectangles: questions

How do you find the area of a rectangle?

Multiply the width by the height. A rectangle 7 units wide and 4 units high has an area of 7 × 4 = 28 square units.

What is the difference between area and perimeter?

Area is the space inside a shape, measured in square units. Perimeter is the distance all the way around the outside, measured in ordinary units. A rectangle 4 by 4 has area 16 and perimeter 16 by coincidence; most shapes differ.

Why is area measured in square units?

Because we find area by counting how many unit squares fit inside, such as square centimetres (cm²) or square metres (m²).

What age is this lesson for?

It suits ages 7 to 11 (Grades 2 to 5). Younger children can use the counting steps, and older students can use the questions about working backwards.
