Age 13 ยท Grade 8 ยท Year 9 ยท Class 8
Maths, coding and Rubik's Cube for 13-year-olds.
At thirteen, learners start to choose their own interests. Projects and goals keep motivation high.
Maths
Linear equations and graphs, Pythagoras, ratio and proportion, probability, simultaneous ideas, indices.
Coding
Larger Python programs, algorithms, introduction to web development and to machine learning ideas.
Rubik's Cube
CFOP with F2L, or a different method; other puzzles such as the 4ร4 and Pyraminx.
A good first goal
Drawing and reading straight-line graphs, and a program that does a real job.
A simple week
About 20 to 30 minutes a day, most days. Here is one way to spread it:
| Day | What to do |
|---|---|
| Mon | Equations and graphs |
| Tue | Geometry |
| Thu | Coding project |
| Sat | Cubing or a maths puzzle |

Age 13: questions parents ask
How do we balance maths, coding and a growing homework load at thirteen?
Fix two or three short slots a week and keep them, rather than aiming for long sessions. Choose a project that matters to the learner so that practice does not feel like extra homework.
What next after the beginner Cube method at thirteen?
Learn two-look OLL and PLL, then F2L. Time five solves each session and watch the average of five. Competitions are a good goal if the learner is interested.
What maths should a 13-year-old be learning?
Linear equations and graphs, Pythagoras, ratio and proportion, probability, simultaneous ideas, indices. Every school sets its own order, so check the textbook your child uses.
Can a 13-year-old learn to code?
Larger Python programs, algorithms, introduction to web development and to machine learning ideas.
Can a 13-year-old solve a Rubik's Cube?
CFOP with F2L, or a different method; other puzzles such as the 4ร4 and Pyraminx.
What school year is a 13-year-old in?
Roughly Grade 8 in the US, Year 9 in the UK and Class 8 in India. It depends on the country, the school and the birthday.
How much should a 13-year-old practise?
20 to 30 minutes a day, most days is plenty, mixed across maths, coding and puzzles. Short and regular beats long and rare.
