Warm-up · think first

Ann is taller than Ben. Ben is taller than Cy. Who is the shortest?

Show the answer

Cy. Draw a line from tall to short: Ann, Ben, Cy.

Teacher tip: Ask them to draw it, even if they know the answer. The drawing is what makes harder puzzles easy.

Part 1 of 4 · learn, see, practise

Putting things in order

Draw a line and place each person as you read each clue. 'Before' and 'after', 'taller' and 'shorter' are directions on the line.

For positions in a row: if someone is 3rd from the front and 5th from the back, there are 2 people in front, 4 behind and the person: 2 + 4 + 1 = 7.

Example 1

Dan is older than Eva. Fay is younger than Eva. Gus is older than Dan. Who is the oldest?

  1. Place Dan above Eva, Fay below Eva.
  2. Gus goes above Dan: Gus, Dan, Eva, Fay.

Answer: Gus

Example 2

In a race Ali finished before Bo but after Cy. Dee finished last. Who was second?

  1. Cy is before Ali, and Ali is before Bo: Cy, Ali, Bo.
  2. Dee is last: Cy, Ali, Bo, Dee.
