Warm-up · think first

A farmer has hens and cows. You count 5 heads and 14 legs. How many cows are there?

Show the answer

2 cows. If all 5 were hens there would be 10 legs. Each cow adds 2 extra legs, and there are 4 extra, so 2 cows.

Teacher tip: Let them draw 5 heads with 2 legs each, then add legs until there are 14.

Counting legs

Hens and ducks have 2 legs, cats, dogs and cows 4, insects like ants and beetles 6, and spiders 8.

Multiply for each kind of animal, then add the kinds together.

Example 1

How many legs do 3 cows and 4 hens have?

  1. Cows: 3 × 4 = 12.
  2. Hens: 4 × 2 = 8.
  3. 12 + 8 = 20.

Answer: 20

Example 2

How many legs do a spider and 2 beetles have?

  1. Spider: 8.
  2. Beetles: 2 × 6 = 12.
  3. 8 + 12 = 20.

Answer: 20
