FAQ

Adding by counting on: questions

How do you teach addition to a 5-year-old?

First by putting groups together and counting all, then by starting at the bigger number and counting on with a number line.

What adding should a Year 1 child know?

Adding numbers within 20, including number bonds and doubles, using + and = signs.

Why use pence in sums?

Coins make maths real. British coins (1p, 2p, 5p, 10p) are a good way to practise adding small numbers.
