How to play Clock Game

  1. Choose a game: Read the clock, Set the clock or What time later?, then a level.
  2. Read it: look at the hands and tap the matching digital time.
  3. Set it: drag the long minute hand around the clock, or use the buttons. The short hour hand moves slowly as the minutes go round, just like a real clock.
  4. Later: the clock shows the start time. Work out the time after the minutes shown.
  5. After every question you see the time written in words, such as “quarter past three”.

Tips and strategy

  • The short fat hand is the hour hand and the long thin hand is the minute hand.
  • When the minute hand is on 12 it is o’clock. On 6 it is half past. On 3 it is quarter past, and on 9 it is quarter to the next hour.
  • Each number on the clock is 5 minutes: 1 is 5 minutes, 2 is 10 minutes, 3 is 15 minutes, and so on.
  • After half past, we say “to” the next hour. 4:50 is ten minutes to five.

FAQ

Clock Game: questions

At what age should a child be able to tell the time?

Most children learn o'clock and half past at 5 to 6, quarter past and quarter to at 6 to 7, and five-minute times at 7 to 8. Every child learns at a different pace.

How do I teach quarter past and quarter to?

Show that a quarter is one of four equal parts of the clock, so quarter past is when the minute hand has gone a quarter of the way round (at the 3), and quarter to is when it has three quarters gone (at the 9).

Why does the hour hand move between numbers?

Because an hour does not jump. As the minutes pass, the hour hand moves smoothly. At half past 3 it is exactly halfway between 3 and 4.

Can my child drag the hands on a tablet?

Yes. Drag the minute hand around the clock face with a finger, or use the buttons for fine control.
