Hiring a website developer is one of those decisions that is easy to get wrong and expensive to undo. The market in India ranges from freelancers to large agencies, with prices and quality all over the place. This checklist helps you compare options calmly and protect yourself.

Before you talk to anyone, write four things

  1. What the website must do. For example: "Parents can see batches and fees and send an enquiry on WhatsApp."
  2. Who it is for. Your typical customer and what they search for.
  3. A budget range you are comfortable with.
  4. A deadline and why it matters (an admission season, a festival, a launch).

A one-page note like this makes every quote easier to compare.

What to ask a developer

  • Show me three similar projects and tell me what you did on each. Visit the sites on your phone: do they load fast and look clear?
  • Who will actually do the work, and will I speak to them?
  • What exactly is included? Number of pages, design rounds, content help, forms, speed and basic search setup.
  • What is not included? Photos, copywriting, extra pages, hosting, domain, maintenance, a payment gateway.
  • How long will it take, with milestones?
  • What do you need from me, and by when?
  • What happens after launch? Support, bug fixes, updates, training.

Ownership: the question people forget

Ask and get in writing:

  • The domain (your-business.in) must be registered in your name and account.
  • Hosting account should be yours, or you should have full access and a way to move.
  • The code and design files: who owns them, and will you get them at handover?
  • Admin logins are given to you, not kept by the developer.

If a developer refuses to give you control of your own domain or login, walk away.

Reading a quote

A good quote lists deliverables, timeline and price, with payment in stages tied to milestones (for example, part at the start, part at design approval, the rest at launch). Be careful of:

  • A very low price that skips things you assumed were included.
  • 100% upfront payment.
  • Monthly fees with no clear reason.
  • Vague wording such as "complete website" with no detail.

Compare quotes by deliverables, not just price. Our guide on website cost in India explains what drives the price.

Red flags

  • Promising "#1 on Google" or guaranteed rankings. No one can honestly promise that.
  • Reselling the same template to everyone, with no work for your business.
  • No contract or written scope.
  • Pressure to decide today.
  • No samples or references, or samples that do not load.
  • Using copied images or text from other sites, which can create legal trouble.
  • Asking for your personal passwords.

Speed, mobile and basics

Most of your visitors will be on phones. Open the developer's own sample sites on a mobile network, and ask about image sizes, caching and how the site is tested on phones. Ask that the basics of search are set up: titles, descriptions, headings, a sitemap and a Google Business Profile link.

A simple way to start

Start small: a clear first version with the pages that matter, launched in weeks, then improved with real feedback. A giant plan that takes six months often arrives out of date.

Common questions

How do I know if a developer is genuine?

Look at real projects you can open, ask who does the work, check reviews on independent sites and insist on a written scope and domain ownership.

Should I hire a freelancer or an agency?

A good freelancer can be great for a simple site. An agency offers a team and continuity, at a higher price. Judge both by the same checklist.

Is a cheap website worth it?

Cheap can be fine for a simple page, but check what is missing. A low price with hidden extras, slow loading or no ownership is expensive in the end.

How long should a business website take?

A simple business site often takes a few weeks. Custom features take longer. Ask for milestones.

Who should pay for hosting and the domain?

You should own them. The developer can set them up for you, but the accounts should be in your name.
