Scratch or Python: which should my child learn first?
A parent's guide to choosing between Scratch and Python for kids: how they differ, the right age for each, how to move from blocks to typed code, and free ways to try both at home.
Most children start coding with one of two tools: Scratch, where you snap together coloured blocks, or Python, where you type real code. Both are excellent. The best choice depends on your child's age and reading and typing confidence.
The difference in one table
| Scratch | Python | |
|---|---|---|
| How you code | Drag and drop blocks | Type text |
| Typical starting age | 6 to 9 | 9 and up (8 with help) |
| Typos possible? | No | Yes, and learning to fix them is part of the skill |
| Best for | Animations, simple games, stories | Games, maths, data, websites, AI and real projects |
| Used by professionals? | No (it's a learning tool) | Yes, widely |
A simple rule of thumb
- Under 8, or not yet typing comfortably: start with Scratch or a command-based game.
- 8 to 10: try a game where they type short commands, such as Code Jungle, and see how they feel about typing.
- 10 and up: go straight to Python. The ideas they learn (loops, if statements, functions) carry over to every language.
Moving from blocks to typed code
Children who start with Scratch already know the big ideas: a sequence of commands, loops that repeat, and if decisions. The jump to Python is mostly about syntax: colons, brackets and indentation. A good bridge is a game where each typed command does something visible, so mistakes are easy to see and fix.
Free things to try at home
- Code Jungle: type Python to guide a monkey through 24 levels, from steps to loops to if statements.
- Turtle Studio: draw shapes with movement commands.
- Python Practice Lab: small challenges that check your code.
When your child wants to build their own projects, our Python and coding classes can guide them.
Common questions
Is Python too hard for a 9-year-old?
Not if it starts small. Short commands with instant visual results work well from about 9, and many 8-year-olds manage with a little help.
Should my child learn Scratch before Python?
It helps younger children but isn't required. Children of 10 or older can start with Python directly.
Which is better for making games?
Scratch is quickest for simple 2D games. Python (with libraries such as Pygame) goes further as skills grow.
